Medellin could receive 37% more income from LGBT Tourism
Colombia received the award as 2017 Best LGBT Destination at the last International Tourism Fair (Fitur), held in Madrid from January 18th to January 22nd. The award, handed over by Diversity Consulting International® – FITUR Gay (LGBT), recognizes the efforts made by the country in promoting tourism in this sector and private public collaboration that has been consolidated in different areas of the tourism chain.
“Medellin is increasing its efforts and we are more prepared to receive these types of tourists, who are looking for a high level offer with very good gastronomy, quality hotels and a wide cultural agenda. We are articulated with Colombia’s strategy to strengthen the city as a more inclusive destination meeting the demand of these types of travelers; nevertheless, there are still aspects to be strengthened regarding this issue.” said Ana Maria Gallego, Manager of The Bureau of Medellin.
While tourism in general grows between 4 and 5% per year, LGBT tourism does so by 10%, according to data provided by the World Travel & Tourism Council and the World Tourism Organization (WTO). In addition, according to Fitur Gay, it moves more than 10% of the volume of tourists worldwide and travelers spend 37% more than the total average on their trips.
“Opportunities of the Tourism sector for this population are growing and they mean a great economic development opportunity for Medellin and Antioquia.” concluded the Manager of the Bureau.
